History

The Tumbleweed is found in October 2001 by band leader Jason (Shen Yan), who by now works at the British Embassy and often helps British rock bands to come and play in China.

taken from Beijinggigguide.com:

There isn't a genre or pat phrase that fit to describe China's the Tumbleweed. Screamo? Post-Grunge? Nu-metal? Heavy-pop? Anyway, the point here is that the Tumbleweed's music defies description in the best way possible.

Let's just call it Chinese modern rock. This could be a new trend for Chinese heavy rock music. The Beijing-based 7-member big band The Tumbleweed favours a radio-friendly post-grunge approach that was aggressive and forceful yet melodic, though they intend to be heavier. Using all the well-known Chinese traditional instruments (Chinese Zither, flutes and Erhu), the band also favours big guitars and big hooks which shows that they have the basic building blocks of a good Chinese modern rock band.

Lead singer/songwriter/guitarist Jason Shen has a strident, heart-on-his-sleeve vocal style and a tendency to bleed emotion all over the page that would seem appropriate in a straight-up screamo/post-hardcore band. He is also the Arts Officer of the Cultural and Education Section of British Embassy. The idea is to be as heavy as possible and as melodic as possible - with a traditional Chinese twist. Jason met the flutist Li Que and started to jam together as a duo (later they became the core of the big band The Tumbleweed). Their first song won them many prizes in various college rock band battles and an World of Legend award of MTV-China in 2004. The Tumbleweeds songs were also featured in the programs on FM97.4, AM774 and Shan Xi Peoples Radio. The group then became bigger and bigger both in size and reputation in the next eight years while polishing their unique modern rock sound.
