AK 47 stands for a new modern noisy hardcore metal that cannot be really described. You have to watch and listen to them, you have to enjoy one of their concerts to know the energy and the anger that this combo is spreading amongst the audience.

Usually wearing a brown uniform with a red AK 47 cloth wrapped around their arm they look more like a army war troop on execution course, but this is not what they are about! They want to spread their music full of power and not bombs full of death as another indivual name G.W.B.

They have released their debut record Chu Fa / Start Off in 2006.

History

“Music is very powerful, just like an AK47. There’s no other meaning. Our music is our gun,” - Han Tian[1]

October 2000, AK 47 is formed around Lao Mao (born 1975) as a band concentrating on industrial, techno and digital hardcore, music styles they are going to transform later on into a new metal electro style. The band’s name was chosen because it sounded powerful and evoked images of fire. It’s not an endorsement of war.[1] Their first live performance took place on December 23rd in the (old) Get Lucky Bar in Beijing.

In May 2001, they performed during the Midi Music Festival 2001. November the same year, AK 47 produces its first demo record The AK-47 Band. Although being an EP, the CD is right away classified among the 10 "Best Albums of the Year" by music magazines such as X-Music (www.xmusicmag.com). AK47 reaches the "National Outstanding Album" Award.[2]

January 2002, AK 47 performs on a festival in Kunming. Later in May, AK 47 performed on the Midi Modern Music Festival 2002, however due to AK 47's variation on instruments and techniques, and the unreliability of the provided equipment during the festival, their live performance was a desaster.

Around June 2002, AK 47s music style changed from previous electro-heavy industrial to industrial metal.

Band Members

Lao Mao, 30, is from hilly and poorer Yunnan, furthest from Beijing and the inflows of foreign capital and culture that have been remaking China.[1]

Han Tian was born in the northerly city of Shenyang in 1982. Han’s father was an accomplished player of the two-stringed erhu, a melancholic-sounding instrument central to traditional Chinese music. Han senior also played bass guitar in a band that did Def Leppard covers. Being themselves from England’s steel capital, Sheffield, Leppard’s sound might have been apt for a town coated in coal dust blowing from its vast steel mills. Han listened in, and then started playing his father’s bass.[1]

Xia Fei: Def Leppard sounded not unlike an early favorite of guitarist Xia Fei, from the southeasterly province of Zhejiang. Short and intense with a goatee beard, Xia, 30, head-banged to Hei Bao (Black Panther), a leather clad, big-haired band from northern Stocky Xia later fell for Metallica.[1]
