在“字母”推出两张新专辑和一张杂锦唱片(艾敬《追月》、艾斯卡《灰狼》、杨炀等《另类流行》)之前,我们听到了他们的四首推荐歌曲。窥斑见豹,可以说“字母”在流行乐坛中又一次反大众情歌和伪民歌、伪摇滚而行,走在了独立音乐的路上,相对于种种嚣张的炒作和迫不及待的媚俗,“字母”是低调的,在商业效益和个性的夹缝中,“字母”又是矛盾困惑的。
低调,也许首先源于怀疑,哪怕是自我怀疑。艾敬在《追月》中唱道:“说了些什么自己也不清楚……丢,丢了魂了!”这首歌是日本写的吧(《字母通讯》编者注:是在伦敦写的),乍一听像蔚华的《新鲜》,再一听更有与蔚华相似的真实:自我的体验、真实的惶惑、情绪的收敛,当然艾敬的演唱比后者好听得多。我要说,发现并承认自己“丢了魂”要比“看来看去眼里只有你”更像人而不是机器。这样,我们就可以相信艾敬是在试图丰富自己,而不是在赶爱尔兰时髦了。至于编曲,正如日本人的电器和汽车,精确巧妙完美,只是没有个性。这年头,用假声唱两句就可以贴上“灵歌”的标签,我们也就不必过于追究“另类流行”这个词的含义,何况其中的老歌和新歌都是本可以做得很商业却终究保持了“音乐第一”的独立品格的流行音乐。杨炀的低调在于《接触不良》的打击乐部分和少许Noise Pop的吉他,而不是唱法或歌词的朦胧感,因为这首歌的音乐是“流行性”的敌人,它微妙,仿佛单调,甚至模糊。尽管英国有不少乐队,如Lush 、Low、 Mazzy Star早已为“朦胧”投下了“影响的焦虑”,但平心而论,《接触不良》并不像其中的某一个,杨炀唱得也极可爱,让人心动。倘若去掉了生硬的小提琴Solo,这首歌就接触良好了。
在沈庆的《爱在情歌汹涌时》中,怀疑精神又一次刺痛了这个泛滥着的时代。沈庆离开了校园民谣时代,他开始了更多的思考,爱如潮水,或者说泛爱如潮水,沈庆却很另类地发出了理性质问:“我们的心要如何保持?”这算得上是真正的“另类流行”吧。虽说Acid Jazz在美国已经红过半天,但对中国人来说还是很新鲜的;青春的忧郁唯美今天已变成略带沉重的疼痛和理想主义的粗糙嗓音,多么意外,又多么让人感动。整首歌音乐层次清晰,合声富于感情,更不要说旋律的简单、流畅和制作的细致。
“字母唱片”自成立以来,除去短暂的林依轮之来去,并无过多的商人气味;但他们也极少迈入太过前卫和“另类”的阵营。作一种有个性和探索性的流行音乐是“字母”的意义,其中要数原灰狼乐队的“灰狼”艾斯卡最靠近边缘了。那是一种融合了新疆民族乐器、民族音阶、民族旋律和民族嗓子的流行摇滚——但这一次,《灰狼》不流行了,它显得阴沉而带着敌意。在京式摇滚的背后,艾斯卡把民族元素变成了仪式般的神秘和压抑,吉它除去没有意义的solo外,保持着不露锋芒的逼迫感,歌词更是暗示了内心的拒绝。我一直觉得艾斯卡缺乏作曲能力,每首歌都像是同一首,但这次,一次不惜求败的自我表达却是值得尊重的。
这便是我所理解的“字母”的低调:他们的独立品格,他们困惑的坚持,他们不成熟中的实力和价值。

Before Letter released two new albums and a mixed record (Ai Jing “Chasing the Moon,” Ai Sika “Gray Wolf,” Yang Yangdeng “The Other Kind of Popular”), we listened to their four recommended songs. When we look further, we see more than meets the eye. We can safely say that Letter is yet again opposing love songs and fake folk songs that are popular in musical circles, and is going instead for fake rock. On the path of independent music, Letter faces all kinds of rampant spin-offs and impatient coarse flattery, but remains low. Limited by economic benefits and expressing its own personality, Letter is contradictory and perplexing.
